Launching or redesigning a magazine or newsletter is a lot like composing a complex piece of music. There needs to be a recognizable “whole” within which there is a plan for different tonalities, variations on a theme, changes in rhythm and pacing. Readers need to be able to easily understand the structure, find their favorite sections, be engaged—and also surprised. Hierarchies of information need to provide useful signposts: departments should be easily recognized, features need to stand out.
We’ve designed magazines, newsletters, and advisories across all our practice areas, even one for an island. . For each, we develop an underlying visual and verbal system that provides a framework for editorial decisions and informs how type, color, imagery, and design come together to yield a publication that is recognizable, connects to the target audiences, and builds brand meaning and image.
While we produce several magazines on a regular basis, often our job is to create a system that can be transferred to our client’s staff; we provide the thinking and tools they need to make creative decisions and produce issues that increase the value of the publication and stay fresh, issue to issue.
